Synchronisation can be a pain. This video may be a painkiller.

ABOUT SYNCHRONISATION:

First 'guide' video. Will be doing more guides and lessons now. I wanted to keep the video short so I didn't go into various things I could have, like the applying this sync principle to other scenarios, like shooting a music video for example. You can append the music track with a series of sync 'beeps' that enable the editor to cue up the video to the artist's performance.

ABOUT MY FIVES BUTCHERING:

I used my Strat because it's just for the exercise. 'Fives' isn't easy to play on it. Really isn't lol And yes I know I over did the bends, the strings are about 6 months old and they don't behave anymore.

I'll do a proper cover of Fives when I get a guitar with enough frets with a trem and decent pickups.

There really isn't much more to add, apart from doing it yourself and experimenting with different sounds and setups, getting used to how the movement of the waveform affects the video and things.

'Improvisation' - A free album from Esgi Available now

Esgi presents 'Improvisation' as a free download, a compilation of a select number of guitar jams performed by Esgi, which were recorded live and put on YouTube over the past twelve months or so, but now mastered and released separately in high quality.

As the title suggests, apart from 'Spanish Folk Song', all of the solos in this project were completely improvised. Featuring a wide range of guitar techniques and playing styles over a wide range of genres and even a piano jam, 'Improvisation' is a bit of fun for people who like instrumental music to enjoy and share, and who have been asking for the YouTube jams to be put together in one place.

Esgi continues his work on his first commercial EP, due out in the first quarter of 2011. In true Esgi style, the EP will feature completely different styles of music to what has been written for his first ambient instrumental sound track album 'Echoes In Time' and his current free release 'Improvisations'. Developing from the styles of 'Anything Goes' and 'When We Touch', the EP will be a unique Pop/ R&B/ Electronic project that shows more of Esgi's commercial writing and production skills.

Listened to the backing track a few times and just started thinking of a Runner-esque cybernetic love scene. Just probably where my mind is at the moment lol So I tried to give it a futuristic ballad feel, like country music in 200 years would be or something :-p

Tried to keep it musical and controlled. The end solo is improvised. Not a perfect take but then again I'm far from perfect :-)

Youtube already shows its many videos of cats falling off things in 720p but from next week you’ll be able to feast on clips in full 1080p HD quality. Could this mean more movies and TV shows for the video sharing site?

Video uploads for normal Youtube users will still be limited to 10 minutes in length but the current 2GB size limit is likely to get a boost.

On the official Youtube blog, the video sharing site also announced that clips already uploaded in 1080p quality will be re-encoded to take advantage of the change.

Are illegal file sharers law-breaking anarchists hell-bent on stealing music? Or are they just enthusiastic music fans celebrating an art form that should be freely available to everyone? Camden-based musician and producer Simon Goldsmith thinks there’s “a fine line between tyranny and freedom.”

Having just released his debut digital album he believes that the reason there’s so much illegal file sharing is because people love music so much: “And for me that’s encouraging.”

“When you’ve got big corporations suing grandmothers because they think they downloaded a track, it’s a situation where it’s a form of totalitarianism, where these corporate entities try and destroy as many people as they can. The art isn’t made by record companies, it’s made by artists, and the whole music industry is supposed to revolve around the artists making the art and the fans appreciating, buying and supporting it. Now these monolithic corporations are just using the artists as a cash cow and protecting their assets. For them it’s not about art, it’s about money.”

Additional technical info.

Music

Recorded with a DI into an MBox2, going into Pro Tools 8. All tones from the Boss ME-50 pedal, along with the wah and volume control. The track was recorded in Reason (I think) originally, but I imported a bounced .wav file into Pro Tools and just improvised over that. The audio was synced with the video in PD7.

Video

The video was shot with a photo camera, not a camcorder! It was a Canon Powershot SD750. Although it has pretty nifty processing settings, I didn't use any for this vid. I imported the .avi into PowerDirector 7, trimmed off the crap and applied a 'glow' filter to the video. Because the wall in the background is light blue, it bleaches the video and expands the amount of white in the image. In a nutshell, makes the colours more vivid.

This is convenient, because the 'color' edge' filter I applied afterwards has less noise to work with. Because the colours (the contrasts between colours) is alot stronger, obvious edges are enhanced, like the guitar and my body. The background is reduced to a simple panel of colour which is ignored by the 'color edge' filter.

Nice! In hindsight, I could have increased the 'glow' amount more and possibly blanked out the background, leaving only me in the video. If I used a chroma-green screen, it could also be superimposed with something else.

Thoughts for the future I suppose.
